The Prime Minister urged to officially rule out using former RAF Scampton site to house asylum seekers
Labour has previously indicated they would do so
It's hoped a major regeneration project at the former RAF Scampton site can move forward much faster if the new Government officially rules out housing asylum seekers there.
West Lindsey District Council has written to the Prime Minister urging him to drop the plans.
Labour has previously indicated that's what they would do.
Council leader Trevor Young although some regeneration was agreed with the previous Government it wasn't ideal.
He says it might be difficult for the current Government to exit any agreements:
"They need to show us how they are going to exit from the site. There's a considerable amount of money that has been spent. Over ÂŁ30 million pounds set up costs.
"ÂŁ39 million pounds for hiring portacabins - that's a staggering amount of money. And then millions of pounds on contracts. So how they The Government are going to get out of that - it could be quite difficult.
Councillor Young says the Council's priorities have always been to protect the regeneration of the site.
"Two very important things for us - one is protecting the heritage, and the second one is protecting that ÂŁ300 million pound development on that site and unlocking that so we are able to have access to the site.
"Now the Labour Government is in place we are hoping that we can do that in a more timely manner.
"We've always stated that Scampton is the wrong place in the wrong site for housing asylum seekers".
