Gaps in the central reserve on Lincolnshire’s stretch of the A1 could be closed to improve safety.

National Highways plans have identified sixteen spots south of Grantham, between Little Ponton and South Witham.

They previously allowed right turns into fields or byways that are no longer used, and aren’t accessible by traffic today.

Councillor Richard Davies, portfolio holder for highways on Lincolnshire County Council, has shared the details online.

The full details of which gaps would be closed and new plans are available on his website.

National Highways has said: “Following engagement with local communities and listening to safety concerns, we’ve identified a number of gaps we intend to close as a proactive safety measure.

“In our first phase of work, we propose to close 16 gaps between Little Ponton and South Witham whilst other road restraint barriers in the area are being upgraded.

“The gaps are located within the central reserve grassed area that is situated between the two opposing directions of road.”

Local road users have until December 14 to share their thoughts on the proposed changes, which they can do on a1improvements@nationalhighways.co.uk.

A recent Freedom of Information request by LincsOnline revealed there were 232 crashes on the A1 in Lincolnshire during 2023.

Three people died during these and 58 were injured.

National Highways says it is looking into ways to make the route safer, but Cllr Davies said more needed to be done.

“The A1 is not merely a “risky” route – it’s a critical safety hazard for Lincolnshire residents, commuters, and commercial drivers alike,” he said.

“As it stands, the road’s design fails to meet the demands of modern traffic, with outdated junctions, dangerous right-turn crossings, and poorly designed slip roads. National Highways’ inaction to address these issues is almost a crime.”
