Footage appeal over Spitfire crash near RAF Coningsby

The Defence Accident Investigation Branch is requesting any footage or photos of Spitfire MK356 after it started flying in April this year

The Defence Accident Investigation Branch is requesting any footage or photos of Spitfire MK356 after it started flying in April this year after it's winter maintenance.

It's as part of the Ministry of Defence investigation into the cause of the Spitfire crash on 25th May 2024 where a pilot died.

Squadron Leader Mark Long was killed when the Spitfire he was flying crashed in a field near RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene on Langrick Road just before 1.20pm on Saturday 25th May. Mr Long was declared dead at the scene.

A number of flowers were left near the scene and tributes from family and colleagues were given.

Since the incident there has been an ongoing Defence Air Investigation Branch (DAIB) investigation.

They are asking anyone with photos or videos to email them on:

The RAF say:

"Every email will be looked at, but please do not be offended if we do not contact you, you will appreciate that we may well be offered multiple video / stills of the same events.

"We are extremely grateful to anyone who takes the time to contact us"
