Shadow Cabinet minister Robert Jenrick has accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of “driving a proud city into the ground” as he chased after Tube fare dodgers.

Mr Jenrick confronted fare dodgers on the London Underground in social media video.

He uploaded a video to X (formerly Twitter) showing him confronting “Lawbreakers” who forced their way through the barriers at Stratford Tube station.

Mr Jenrick asked one of the men: “Why don’t you go back and pay?”

To which the man responded by swearing at him.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Justice warned that crimes such as bike theft, phone theft and shoplifting are “chipping away at society,”

Transport for London responded to the viral video stating that: “Fare evasion is unacceptable.

“That is why we are strengthening our capability to deter and detect fare evaders, including expanding our team of professional investigators to target the most prolific fare evaders across the network

“This builds on the work of our team of more than 500 uniformed officers already deployed across the network to deal with fare evasion and other anti-social behaviour, keeping staff and customers safe.”

Mr Jenrick ended the video by calling for the state to “reassert itself” and to “go after lawbreakers.”
