Widnes redevelopment plans to be discussed
Many changes are being proposed
Ambitious plans to radically reshape Widnes town centre and make it fit for the future are set to be discussed by council chiefs.
Changes could see an expanded evening economy with bars and restaurants, more town centre housing and work spaces, a relocated outdoor market and improved connectivity between different parts of the centre such as The Hive and Widnes Shopping Park.
A nature trail leading from Victoria Park, more cultural and family events, trees and a ‘pedestrian-first’ approach are also being considered. The proposals are only outline at this stage, but are intended to shape the direction of the town centre up until 2040.
Proposals include:
Kingsway Quarter – building a housing development on the site of the old court and leisure centre buildings with around 120 homes including elderly accommodation.
Albert Square – creating a new workspace with up to 250 desks. Such workspaces can accommodate business incubators, start-ups and freelancers. One such workspace is set to be opened by international brand Regus in the former TJ Hughes building. The area could also host new homes, arts and cultural events as well as provide a possible site for a relocated outdoor market.
Enhancing the ‘historic spine’ of the town centre along Widnes Road and Albert Road- this would include new areas designed to encourage footfall, improved pedestrian access and crossing points.
The strategy document said:
“The plans that will come forward will aim to diversify the population, catering for both older residents who need assisted care, but also bringing in more young adults and working age residents by providing more affordable homes as an alternative to living in the city centre of either Manchester or Liverpool.”
The plan also includes ‘green corridors’ with trees and flowers to make the town centre look more welcoming and pleasant, along with spaces for community socialising and families.
Key public spaces, particularly Derby Square, Victoria Square and a new Albert Square would feature a year round event programme.
The strategy added:
“The goal is to ultimately improve the quality of life of the current and future people living in Widnes, whilst positively contributing to the town’s economic, social, and cultural well-being in providing long term opportunities.”
