Voters in Blackpool South are heading to the polls today to choose a new MP.

The vote is being held alongside local elections after Conservative MP Scott Benton stepped down.

People across the region will also choose their next police and crime comissioner.

It comes as millions of people across the country will also be choosing local councillors and regional mayors in some areas.

The polls are the final test of public opinion at the ballot box ahead of the next general election, which could happen later this year.

A total of 11 mayoral contests are also taking place,=.

In Blackpool South, the votes for the next MP will be counted overnight with a result expected in the early hours of the morning.

Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm.
