West Mercia Police are reminding people to check they have the correct protection in place to stop their personal data from being stolen while online.

The force is wanting to highlight and focus on how two-factor verification (2SV) or two-factor authentication (2FA) and extra security methods can help keep information safe.

2\FA acts as a security method that requires two forms of identification to access resources and data, working alongside having a password.

Rebecca Smith from West Mercia Police's cyber crime and fraud unit says having a second login method does make a real difference.

"We're not saying that it's going to make it impossible, we're just putting more steps in to make it more difficult for them," she said

"It works by providing that secondary step, so passwords can be stolen by cyber criminals which can potentially give them access to your online accounts, however, if you have 2SV set-up it will require the extra check.

"So then even if criminals know your password, it will be harder for them to access your accounts."
