The director of a charity based in Worcester says it's important people listen to advice when it comes to water safety, and not just rely on their swimming ability.

Research last week carried out by Better, showed that one in five people consider swimming more useful in adult life than some other subjects.

Matt Croxall is from the Royal Life Saving Society, and says it's important to listen to advice on keeping safe.

"It's a huge life skill to be able to swim, but it's not the be-all and end-all when it comes to water safety," he said.

"There are certain skills that we want to get across in our water safety code, that to some extent it doesn't matter how good a swimmer you are.

"Swimming is a really good building block for keeping you and your loved ones safe, but it's also the skills that go alongside swimming that enable you to know what to do if you're struggling in water, or if you see somebody else struggling in water, that are really vital.

"We're asking families to familiarise themselves with the water safety code, so that's stopping and thinking before you enter the water, but also making sure that you're not going out swimming in an unfamiliar place by yourself."

Drowning prevention week runs from the 15th-22nd June.
