People across Herefordshire and Worcestershire will be coming together to mark five years since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Today (Sunday 9 March 2025) is the Day of Reflection across the UK for the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is an opportunity to come together to remember those who lost their lives since the pandemic began and to honour the tireless work and acts of kindness shown during this unprecedented time.

People and communities are invited to come together on the COVID-19 Day of Reflection, to mark the day in ways that feel meaningful to them.

James Pacey, Canon Chancellor at Hereford Cathedral, explains why we need to mark this day.

He said: “We need to remember, not only those who died and those who gave of themselves, but the sacrifices that everyone made, the trauma that was unleased, the pain that was accumulated. It was one of those events that we need to acknowledge, that we need to come together and not pretend didn’t happen.

“One of the many good things the church does is that it’s a public space that gives voice to these big, large-scale events. When people are looking for ways to articulate their feelings, but they don’t have the tools to do that.”

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Mel Allcott, gave a short speech on the steps of the Guildhall at noon yestetrday, which was followed by a minute’s silence.

The Guildhall will also be illuminated yellow during the week leading up to the Day of Reflection. Residents are also being encouraged to sign an online book of remembrance and leave a message about the loved ones they lost during the pandemic.
