Viewers of ITV daytime show This Morning were treated to a little bit of romance today (Monday 17th February), when a couple got engaged live on the show alongside stand-in hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.

A lady called Mercedes Witchalls believed she was on a studio tour with her daughter Ava, but Eamonn and Ruth were quick to reveal their 'big surprise', leaving some viewers in floods of tears.

Mercedes has only been able to talk to her partner Grenadier Guard Gregg Whitehall via text over the last six months, with Gregg missing both Christmas and Valentine's Day due to being based in the Falkland Islands with the army.

So, after Gregg left Mercedes a video message which was played out on the show, Mercedes couldn't believe her eyes when her man walked into the studio, looking very handsome in his full army uniform.

The surprises didn't end there though! After embracing his girlfriend and daughter with a big hug, Gregg then got down on one knee and proposed to Mercedes, saying, "Will you make me the happiest man?"

In complete shock, Mercedes broke down in tears before accepting Gregg's proposal, which left viewers very emotional.

Speaking to Ruth and Eamonn after the proposal, Gregg revealed he was supposed to be back in time for Valentine's Day last week, but Storm Dennis prevented him from travelling home, so it was great to be reunited with his girls.

As if this wasn't enough excitement for one day, This Morning then gifted the happy couple an all expenses paid trip to the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon!

After witnessing the cute proposal, viewers took to Twitter to express their love, one user wrote, '#ThisMorning are really setting me again today with this proposal..... congratulations to the couple. I can't stop crying. I'm so happy for them.'. (sic)

Another wrote, 'Just welled up over the surprise proposal on this morning,' with a third adding, 'You lot just made me smile and shed a year!! The proposal. You horrible lot!! ;)'. (sic)
