Back in 2024, Netflix delighted users by announcing a brand new musical talent show called Building the Band, featuring Nicole Scherzinger, Liam Payne and Kelly Rowland attempting to create the perfect band.
However, following the shock and sad passing of One Direction star Liam in October, the streaming platform put the show's release on hold, with reports suggesting they were seeking permission from Liam's family to use the already recorded production.
Now, in January 2025, Netflix have released their 2025 slate, confirming the show will air sometime in 2025.
Featuring alongside shows such as Black Mirror series seven, Nobody Wants This series two, Stranger Things series five, and Squid Game series three, Netflix have revealed further details about the new show.
What is Building The Band?
Building the Band is a brand new talent show created for Netflix, with a similar format to hit dating show Love Is Blind, as the contestants are in individual booths at the beginning.
Netflix say of the show: 'Building the Band brings together talented singers for a truly unique competition show where building the perfect band is all about chemistry. The singers are in complete control as they seek to form their very own bands in individual ‘booths’ without ever seeing each other.
'All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit. What will happen when the bands finally meet, and looks, choreography, and style come into play? With incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal—to find the next great music band—the stage is set for an unforgettable experience.'
Executive Producer Cat Lawson said ahead of filming last year: “Building the Band is a brave and bold undertaking for all involved as we hand over power to the singers themselves to form their own band based on chemistry first. With looks out of the equation, can they create a deeper connection with their bandmates? With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heart-stopping moments along the way, but ultimately the outcome is truly amazing, with bands forming who in my opinion are worthy of the very biggest stage!”
When does it start?
Netflix are yet to confirm and exact start date, but they have confirmed it will be available to watch sometime in 2025.
Who are the judges?
The Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger is the head mentor and judge on the series, and she's joined by Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland, and the late Liam Payne, as the trio bring their expertise and personal band experience to the competition.
Just months after filming the series, One Direction singer Liam tragically died at the age of 31 following a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Liam's funeral took place in Buckinghamshire in November last year, with Cheryl, the mother to his son Bear, in attendance, as well as his One Direction band mates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.
Who is the host?
Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean is the host.
How can I watch it?
Building the Band will air on Netflix.
When was it filmed?
Filming for Building the Band took place in 2024, with three lives shows also being filmed in late August at Aviva Studios in Manchester.
