Mike Toolan shares pride as son Luca's final scenes air in Coronation Street
He's been playing the role of bad boy Mason
Last updated 7th Jan 2025
It was back in September 2023 when Hits Radio Drivetime presenter Mike Toolan announced his son Luca Toolan had landed a new role on iconic soap Coronation Street, with Mike expressing his pride at the time.
Despite keeping the audition process secret from his dad, 20-year-old Luca joined the cast as a Year 11 student at Weatherfield High called Mason, as Corrie tackled a new storyline around bullying.
Over 16 months later, Luca's final scene as Mason has now aired, in an exit storyline which left his character brutally murdered.
Taking to social media after the scenes aired on Monday (6th January), proud dad Mike said: 'What a journey. Unbelievably proud. Well done mate. ❤️ @coronationstreet What a show, what an experience and what amazing friends you’ve made along the way. Here’s to the next chapter @lucatoolan'. (sic)
Luca also posted a video out to his followers and fans of Corrie, revealing the soap 'made a little lad's dream come true'.
He said in the video: "I've just finished my last scene, as you can see here. It's a weird feeling, it's a really weird feeling. But I just wanted to say to you guys, everybody watching, thank you.
"Because without every single one of you watching, we wouldn't of had any of this. You've made a little lad's dream come true. I'm grateful. I'm very grateful. Year and a half has just flown by. It feels weird coming to a close, but I'm just full of pride and joy and gratitude for your support.
"So, thank you, over and out, last of Mason. Whether you loved him or hated him, this is me gone. So enjoy the peace on your screens. Well, probably not, because i's Corrie, but yeah, see you later."
Corrie stars past and present were quick to comment on Luca's final scenes as Mason.
Andy Whyment said: 'He’s been amazing Mike 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻', with Samia Longchambon adding: '🥺👏🏼💔❤️'. (sic)
Fans of the soap also expressed they were gutted to see Luca leave. One wrote: 'Luca was amazing he is an incredible actor ❤️ going to miss him in corrie 😢 but looking forward to seeing him in new things ❤️'. (sic)
Another added: 'OMG He did so amazing!!! 👏👏👏 Wow what an emotional episode - well done to your talented lad Luca and good luck on your next adventures, I’m sure it won’t be too long until you’re back on our screens 👍🏻 Good luck!'. (sic)
A third then wrote: 'What an amazing young man - every right to be proud - excellent Actor what a loss to the show'. (sic)
Back in September 2023, Mike spoke about the moment he found out about his son's new role. He said: "I was actually on air with Brooke (Vincent) and he called me to say 'I’ve got a job!'
"I thought he meant he would be playing a corpse in Casualty, but he went on to tell me he was the new baddie in Corrie!"
Mike also told us he was thrilled at the news, explaining: "He has worked every hour studying every great School of Acting, analysing performances on TV and signed up to every acting class within a 30 mile radius.
"To join a TV show that he has watched since a kid, and that his Granny's favourite show (she’s watched every episode) is an absolute dream come true."
When Luca was asked who he first told when he got the part, he said: "First thing I did was rang my dad. I didn't actually tell anybody about anything, not even the first self-tape, because I'm very superstitious.
"I also didn't tell him about the screen test so he was surprised. Obviously he knows I'm into acting, but he was like, 'What? What do you mean?' Because usually I tell him about all my auditions, and this was the first one I didn't. He was just in complete shock. He knows how much of a big deal it is and understands how lucky I am to be in the position that I am.
"I also rang my Grandma as she is a massive Corrie fan, she didn’t believe it and thought I was pulling her leg!"
He's going to be a big miss on Corrie, but we can't wait to see what is next for Luca!
