The Masked Singer fans were left gobsmacked on Saturday night (11th January) after this week's unmasking almost didn't happen! Toad in the Hole was the latest character to face the boot, after losing to Bear in the sing-off.

But the celebrity hiding underneath had other ideas — walking off the stage as soon as the judges announced who'd they'd chosen to save.

'I Try' singer, Macy Gray — who (unsurprisingly) turned out to be the masked celebrity behind the quirky costume is reported to have taken some time to coax back on stage — leaving judges, and a studio audience, left unsure what to do.

But Macy eventually arrived back on stage to remove her mask, and answer questions from the judges — albeit with one-word answers. And she didn't look happy! The toe-curling moment has taken the internet by storm, with many fans quick to comment on Macy's reaction. Comments on Instagram include: 'That was soooo awkward to watch' and 'I hope Gogglebox was being filmed watching this!'

Even presenter Joel Dommett waded in on the debate, sharing a clip of the moment on Instagram, captioned 'lol':

The judges cited their reasons for choosing Toad in the Hole to be eliminated, saying: "We've come to the conclusion that we're pretty certain who you are. And we're just desperate to see if we're right so I hope you can forgive us."

Mo Gilligan, Maya Jama, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and guest judge Suranne Jones were then left open-mouthed as Toad in the Hole turned around and walked off the stage.

The singer's huge 1999 hit 'I Try' peaked at Number 6 and made her famous for her gravelly tone and iconic lyrics: 'I try to say goodbye and I choke, I try to walk away and I stumble.'

Oh the irony!
