Friday Night Dinner creator Robert Popper has confirmed that the sixth season of the show will be the last, following the sad death of one of the show's stars Paul Ritter. Paul, who was known for playing the hilarious Martin Goodman, passed away in April from a brain tumour.

Series six ended back in 2020, and speaking to LadBible Robert has now said that the last episode was in fact one of his favourites, revealing that he doesn't want to carry on the story. In the finale episode fans saw both Adam and Jonny find out their girlfriends were pregnant, which Robert has now described as a fitting end.

Although the show's creator admitted that he didn't plan for series six to be the last, he did reveal that he "didn’t want to do a series where they had kids and babies", although he added: "I never really know until I start."

Looking back at his time working on the show, Robert gushed over his close relationship with the cast, saying: "The bit I always liked the best was when, before we filmed, say, a dinner scene, it would be just the cast, me and the director, and we would do it without their script, and it was just us.

"And I always liked that because seeing it said properly in the actual space, but no one else watching, those moments I always like, because when you're filming, you do the shot, you do it three times, you do it from this angle and this angle, and after a while, you've heard the lines 50 times."

The news comes shortly before the new documentary, Friday Night Dinner: 10 Years And a Lovely Bit of Squirrel, is set to air on Channel 4. The documentary will see footage filmed of Paul and his co-stars earlier this year.

Paul Ritter tragically passed away at the age of 54, in April of this year. The beloved actor had sadly suffered from a brain tumour.

Friday Night Dinner: 10 Years And a Lovely Bit of Squirrel will air on Channel 4 on 28th May. Friday Night Dinner is also available to stream now on All 4.
