Adolescence: Hidden meaning behind Jamie's half sandwich revealed
An expert has revealed all!
Netflix's latest limited series Adolescence is taking the world by storm right now, kick-starting the career of talented actor Owen Cooper and breaking viewing records day-by-day. Starring Liverpudlian Stephen Graham, the four-part series has really hit home, with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer even supporting a campaign for the series to be shown in schools.
Episode three in particular, which was actually filmed first in the clever continuous one-shot style, featured a long dialogue between accused murderer, 13-year-old Jamie Miller, and psychiatrist Briony, played by The Crown star Erin Doherty.
Whilst viewers have praised the pair for the tense scene, with many thinking they should win awards for their performances, a lot of viewers have questioned the significance of the half sandwich Erin gives to Jamie.
Arriving in the room, Erin tells Jamie she's saved him half of her cheese and pickle sandwich, which is wrapped in cling film and placed onto the desk.
Psychologist Dannielle Haig has now spoken to Tyla about the scene, where she's revealed the gesture was a test to Jamie.
She told the publication: "The half-sandwich, particularly the fact that it contains something Jamie dislikes, could be a way of testing his response.
"Does he push it away? Does he eat it to be polite? Does he comment on it? These reactions provide insight into his personality.
"If he simply tolerates it without complaint, it may suggest a history of feeling powerless and being accustomed to having things done to him rather than for him. It's a clever way of gauging how Jamie sees himself in relation to authority figures and whether he feels able to assert his own needs."
This comes after Adolescence became Netflix's most-watched limited series and most-watched UK title in its first two weeks, racking up a HUGE 66.3 million views worldwide since it first launched on 13th March.
After answering questions from fans about the clever techniques used to film the series, bosses later released Owen Cooper's audition tapes, which show exactly why the talented young actor landed such a big role for his debut job.
Netflix say of the popular series: 'Adolescence tells the story of how a family’s world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school. Stephen Graham will play Jamie’s father and ‘appropriate adult’, Eddie Miller. Ashley Walters stars as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, and Erin Doherty is Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case.'
