He's suffered a vocal cord haemorrhage

The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes has told fans he’s ‘gutted’ about having to undergo surgery on his throat today (18th April).

Nathan is suffering from a haemorrhaged vocal cord and has flown out to Los Angeles for his operation – and to make matters worse, it’s his 20th birthday!

The band’s management confirmed that Nathan will be taking an “unforeseen hiatus form The Wanted” as he takes time to recover.

They added: “The priority for Nathan, his label and management is that he is given time to recover and receive the best treatment possible."

Taking to Twitter, Nathan told his 1.2million followers last night: “Gutted… Can’t sleep. So much on my mind.”

After an outpouring of support from his fans, Nathan wrote later: “Thank you for all of the kind messages. Putting a smile on my face :) x”

Nathan isn’t the first high-profile pop star to suffer from a vocal cord haemorrhage. In October 2011, Adele was forced to cancel two tours because of the problem.

She successfully underwent laser microsurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in November and took an extended break from music to help her recovery.
