Katy Perry had been a bit quiet on the music scene, before releasing 'Woman's World' back in the summer of 2024 — her first song in three years — and then following it with singles 'Lifetimes', and 'I'm His, He's Mine'.

Then just a couple of months later, in September 2024, the megastar finally dropped her new album '143', sending fans into a frenzy. Here's everything there is to know about Katy's sixth studio album, including which musicians feature on it, and what those magic numbers really mean...

What does '143' mean?

Katy named her latest album '143' because the numbers are often associated with the words 'I love you'. Calling it her 'angel number', 143 has been used by many, for decades, as shorthand for the declaration of love (as the numbers represent the amount of letters in each word).

Katy said in an interview with Apple Music: "It's my angel number. It's my symbol, it's my sign. A couple years ago, we were going through a little bit of a hard time medically in our family, and it was a little bit scary, and I started seeing 143 in many different ways.

"I really believe it was my angels, my guides, saying, 'I love you. We got you. We're going to protect you. You're exactly where you're meant to be. You're on the path.'"

When was it released?

'143' was released on 20th September 2024.

What did Katy Perry say about releasing new music?

Despite having her Las Vegas residency, Katy Perry: Play, the singer hadn't released any solo music since the birth of her little girl Daisy Dove Bloom in 2020, until July 2024. Although, she did feature on 'When I'm Gone' with DJ Alesso and 'Electric' which appeared on 'Pokémon 25: The Album', both in 2021.

Ahead of her Vegas residency coming to a close in November 2023, Katy opened up in August 2023 about the prospect of new music and what fans could expect from the 'Dark Horse' singer.

Speaking to Good Morning America, Katy said that Play had been her favourite show to create. She continued: "I know how important it is to some audience members," explaining how her fans weren't just buying tickets to her gigs, they were using their "hard-earned money" and "planning a vacation around it."

She went on to say: "I'm just so grateful for the continuous opportunity to keep evolving as an artist, as a human, as a mother, and to be able to keep bringing joy to people's lives through the arts and entertainment and visuals."

The singer then opened up about working on new music, confirming she had been writing new material. She told GMA: "I think that I'm writing a lot and have written a lot from a place of love, because I'm feeling so much of it - so much unconditional love, that love you never knew existed."

She continued: "I'm always writing, I have been, but I think what's really important to me is to be celebrating the world that I've got to build with all of these wonderful songs and to be responsible for a life for a three-year-old. I will be back, but let me get this right."

Reflecting on her residency, Katy said: "I will always remember this joy of community and family and togetherness, all singing the same song. It's been a bunch of strangers under one roof singing the same song. So, there's an energy that's wonderful.

"I'll never forget that energy. I'll never forget the joy. I'll never forget the happiness."

Since speaking on Good Morning America, Katy then teased 'KP6' while performing at her residency. She told her fans: "If you can’t love me at my 'Witness' and 'Smile' era, then you can’t love me in my 'KP6' era."

Who features on the album?

'143' includes a number of guest appearances from the likes of Kim Petras, 21 Savage, Doechii and JID. Rapper, 21 Savage features on 'Gimme Gimme', while 'Gorgeous' features Kim Petras and 'I'm His, He's Mine' features 'Anxiety' singer, Doechii. Meanwhile Katy collaborated with American rapper, JID, on 'Artificial'.

What artwork is on the cover?

Described by Katy as a 'dance party' album, it's no surprise the cover is a vibrant mix of colour. Katy features against a heart-shaped backdrop, in an angel-like pose, symbolising (as mentioned above) her angel-number '143' and the hidden meaning behind the title; I love you.
