Although he’s probably best known for his massive hit singles ‘Ridin’ Solo’, ‘Talk Dirty’ and ‘Whatcha Say’, Jason has recently become a massive social media star, gaining millions of followers on sites like TikTok and Instagram over the last few years thanks to his entertaining content during lockdowns.

Jason was born on 21st September in 1989, making him currently 35-years-old.

Jason was born in Miramar, which is part of Miami, Florida, USA. His parents are Haitian, and his first language was Haitian Creole.

How did Jason get famous?

Unsurprisingly, Jason's musical talents showed from a young age, with him attending a Performing Arts school in Florida.

By the age of just eight, Jason had written his first song and by his teens he'd started to compose tracks for major artists such as Pitbull and Lil Wayne.

After appearing on and winning American variety show Showtime at the Apollo in 2006, Jason was later discovered by music producer J.R Rotem, who went on to sign him to his labels Beluga Heights Records and Warner Bros. Records.

Jason released his debut single 'Whatcha Say' in August 2009 and the rest is history! In February 2025, Jason joined Fleur East where he opened up about his rise to fame, and writing some of his most successful music.

He sure is! Despite now being a popular TikTok-er, Jason is still releasing bops such as 'Saturday/Sunday' with French DJ sensation David Guetta, which was released on 9th February 2023 and 'Hands on Me' featuring Meghan Trainor, released on 13th October 2023.

In June 2023, Jason released the single 'Glad U Came' — and in the summer of 2024, he featured in a banger by Jax Jones, also featuring Joel Corry, called 'Tonight (D.I.Y.A)'. The song was later remixed to include Mr Worldwide himself, Pitball.

Is he still with his girlfriend?

Jason dated American model Jena Frumes since January 2020, with the pair actually meeting in the gym. However, the pair announced their split five months after they welcomed son Jason King.

Announcing the split, Jason wrote on Twitter: 'Jena and I have decided to part ways. She is an amazing mother but we feel being apart at this time will allow us to be the best versions of ourselves and the best parents we could be. Pls respect our privacy in this time.' (sic)

Jason has since opened up about co-parenting and how it can be "a beautiful thing". They still spend time together and even posed for ADORABLE family Halloween photos, which even caused speculation the pair may have got back together. Neither party confirmed this, however.

The former couple first announced they were expecting their first child at the end of March 2021.

Sharing a cute video of the pair together in the Bahamas, Jason can be seen kissing his girlfriend's baby bump, telling fans: 'Couldn’t be more excited for this new chapter in our life @jenafrumes @bahamarresorts'. (sic)

During the various lockdowns that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, Jason, like many others, passed the time with none other than popular social media app TikTok. He utilised the social media site to revamp his musical career, gaining millions of followers during lockdowns.

Although Jason has since created a number of viral videos on the platform, perhaps the most notably is the corn video. The video, which has now been viewed over 20 million times, shows Jason eating a piece of corn on a power drill, whilst his teeth fall out.

Speaking to Complex, Jason said of TikTok: "With TikTok, I’m able to show who I am, whereas in other apps I didn’t thrive as much because I couldn’t show me.”

Jason debut single as a signed artist arrived way back in 2009. The single, 'Whatcha Say', hit Number 1 in the US and peaked at Number 3 on the Official UK Singles Chart.

'Whatcha Say' was the lead single from Jason's self-titled debut album and sampled Imogen Heap's single 'Hide and Seek'.

'Talk Dirty' is the name of Jason's third album released in the USA, it was also released under the name 'Tattoos' around the world. Jason chatted to us about his most successful album, explaining it was written after he had received a life-threatening injury.

"You know the best changes can happen, and I feel like in that moment, well in that time period, I was able to, you know, just block out all the noise and just focus in on what mattered, which was the creative," Jason explained.

"I got lost in a routine, so every single day I did the same thing, the same time, I ate at the same time, I went to sleep at the same time, I made music at the same time every single day," he continued.

"And that was when I made my most successful album. The ‘Talk Dirty’ album, which had six platinum songs on it and it was at my lowest point in my life."

Admitting he couldn't dance to the songs he'd written due to his injury, Jason said: "But I was trying to make music that was totally opposite of how I actually felt inside, you know. I was really just trying to put myself in a different headspace and yeah, it ended up paying off."

Jason has collaborated with some major artists during his time in the world of music, perhaps most notably Little Mix on their hit single 'Secret Love Song'.

He also teamed up with 2 Chainz on the hit 'Talk Dirty', Flo Rida on 'Hello Friday', and David Guetta on 'Goodbye'.

Jason Derulo is actually his stage name! The singer's real name is Jason Joel Desrouleaux. He told Hits Radio the reason he changed his name was that no one could pronounce it.

"In marketing, you need to treat your audience as if they know nothing, and nobody knew how to say my name," he revealed.

"When I was at school, there was (he tried to pronounce his name badly). I was like, 'why am I trying to confuse everybody, let me just make it simple', and I did it phonetically - D E R U L O, but my actual last name is Desrouleaux"

Was he in Cats?

Let's be honest, the less said the better about this movie, but Jason did land a big part in it!

He played the role of Rum Tum Tugger in the 2019 adaptation, starring alongside the likes of James Corden, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench and Idris Elba.

The film suffered a massive loss of $113.6m at the box office, with Jason admitting he later thought it was going to change the world.

He told the Daily Telegraph: “Cats checked all the boxes. You can’t get a more star-studded cast, you don’t get a more respected director than an Oscar winner – and Rum Tum Tugger is a legacy role, a standout character in a classic musical.

“Even when I saw the trailer, I thought it looked unbelievable. Like, I know some people saw it and they were terrified, but I got chills down my spine! I thought it was gonna change the world.”
