He released new single 'Medicine' on 5th March

James Arthur has confessed that “everything has taken a step up” since leaving Simon Cowell’s Syco label in July 2020.

James joined record label Columbia after his former label Syco became defunct in the Summer of 2020.

Jordan Lee caught up with the 2012 X Factor winner to chat about his new single ‘Medicine’ and forthcoming album.

The singer-songwriter confessed that he wanted a change and is happy with the new start.

“I was ready to freshen things up a little bit. Sadly Syco were no more, so I was a free agent in the UK and thankfully Columbia came for me and have impressed me massively. Everything has taken a step up.”

James first enjoyed chart success with his X Factor winner’s single ‘Impossible’ which reached number one in 2012. Four years later, he was back at the top of the charts with hit ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’.

He said, “I’ve never wanted to be the type of artist that goes away for two years and be in that cycle. I want to keep releasing music. That was another reason for the label switch up, I wanted to be more prolific and active.”

Sony Music Entertainment retained sole ownership of Syco Music in July 2020 whilst label founder Simon Cowell acquired sole ownership of Syco Entertainment, which hosts his TV brands including X Factor and Got Talent.

James continued, “Off the back of the success of ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ a few years back, I didn’t really follow it up in the way I would have liked. I think we could have capitalized a bit more on it than we did. That was the reason for the move for me and it has proven so far to be an inspired decision, so I’m happy about it.”

Like many other artists, the ‘Medicine’ singer found time in 2020 to dedicate to writing and producing more music, something which he wouldn’t necessarily have had previously.

He said, “There was no plans to make an album in 2020 before the pandemic because of the US tour we had planned and I was going to be on the road the entire time.

“The fact that I was afforded that time to make music and focus on one thing was a blessing. I hate to refer to it as a blessing but I’m sure you have probably heard it from a lot of artists. It was kind of needed for a lot of us, we’re on the move and travelling and there is always pressure points everywhere and we never really get to focus on just the music. That’s a real luxury and I was able to make an album within that year. I’m so happy with it.”

James released his single ‘Medicine’ on 5th March and the slightly heavier sound is something fans of James should get accustomed to.

He said, “It’s something I feel like I’ve been edging towards for years now. I’m from a rock background and I used to be in rock bands. ‘Medicine’ was the perfect way to kick off this series of music. Because I made it all in one place in my house, it feels very coherent.”

We can’t wait to hear the rest of the album!
