ITV defends its decision to mute Kanye West’s BRITs performance
The song was barely audible
ITV has stood behind its decision to mute large parts of Kanye West’s performance at last night’s BRIT Awards.
While Kanye showed off new track ‘All Day’, taken from his upcoming album, ITV repeatedly censored the track, leading to lots of criticism from viewers.
However the media company has stated that it is “standard practice” to protect audiences from inappropriate language.
It said: “ITV took the decision to use an audio mute during the performance. The BRITs is broadcast live on ITV from 8pm to a wide audience.
“We have operated a short time delay as standard practice for some years on the show, to allow us to mute language that may be inappropriate for that wide audience, and elected to do so in this case, given the performance took place shortly after the 9pm watershed.”
The ‘Yeezus’ rapper was joined on stage by flame throwers and a large number of backing performers as he carried out the explosive show.
He last performed at the 2006 BRIT Awards, where he played a medley of his biggest hits accompanied by a large number of backing dancers fully covered in gold.
West has won three BRITs in the past and has been nominated eight times in total.
