There's going to be another Luther movie with Idris Elba

Following the monumental success of 2023 movie Luther: The Fallen Sun, it's now been announced there's going to be a follow-up, with the man himself Idris Elba returning as DCI John Luther.

Fans of the BBC drama were over the moon in 2022 when Netflix initially revealed plans to produce a follow-up movie, with The Fallen Sun landing on the streaming platform on 10th March 2023.

After the success of the film, which starred Idris Elba as DCI John Luther, and the likes of Andy Serkis, Cynthia Erivo and Hattie Morahan, Idris expressed his interest in making a second instalment.

Is there going to be another Luther movie?

Yes! Nearly three years after the first movie, Netflix have now confirmed there's going to be a second Luther movie.

The news was announced on Tuesday 11th November, with the caption: 'Luther, Alice, and Schenk are BACK. Idris Elba, Dermot Crowley, and Ruth Wilson will reunite for an all new LUTHER movie.

'Luther has been secretly called back into service amidst a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead.' (sic)

What is it called?

At this stage, the movie doesn't have an official name.

When is it out?

There's no word on a release date just yet, but filming is expected to begin in early 2026.

What will the second movie be about?

Although there's not too many plot details just yet, Netflix have said: 'When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?'

Director Jamie Payne also said: “Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley.

“I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!”

Who is in the cast?

Idris Elba will reprise his role as DCI John Luther in the second movie, with Ruth Wilson joining the cast. Although Ruth didn't appear in the first movie, she starred in the series as Alice Morgan.

Dermot Crowley will also reunite with Idris to reprise his role of Detective Superintendent Martin Schenk.

Further casting details are expected to be announced in the coming months.

It's understood the second movie will be released on streaming platform Netflix.

What has previously been said about a second movie?

Before being officially announced, Idris spoke a lot about the potential of a sequel, telling KISS Breakfast's Jordan and Perri: "All I can tell you is that we have got a story for the next one."

In true Luther fashion, we don't know if we're going to it... but we are going to. There's definitely hope!"

Whilst promoting the first series of his gripping new Apple TV series Hijack, Idris said to Collider: "It did really well. Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement, since it was the first film from the television show. I’m hoping to make another one.

"I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed."

When did the first Luther movie come out?

Luther: The Fallen Sun arrived in selected cinemas on 24th February 2023, before landing on Netflix on 10th March 2023.
