It's already been a hugely successful year for Zayn Malik and now things have just got a whole lot better for him.

Last night (Sunday 20th November), the former One Direction singer attended the American Music Awards with his girlfriend Gigi Hadid and he only went and won!

Zayn picked up the best new artist of the year award after the release of his debut album Mind Of Mind and his hugely successful debut solo single 'Pillowtalk'.

After beating off competition from Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers, DNCE and Shawn Mendes, the 23-year-old seemed rather overwhelmed in his acceptance speech. He said, "It's been a crazy year. I can't thank the people who have been with me everyday for the past year enough. To this very point, being stood on this stage is crazy."

"My family, my mum, my dad, everybody in my family who's been supporting me this last year, especially my dad actually, so thank you dad.

"Also big, big, big thank you to my f** fans because you guys have been sick.

"I didn't expect anybody to still vote for me so thank you for voting for me. I'll put it on my fireplace."

Zayn wasn't the only One Direction connection at the AMA's. Niall Horan, who recently released his first solo single, also attended the star studded event.

Niall performed his track 'This Town' live.

Niall will be hoping to mirror the success of former bandmate Zayn when he releases his debut solo album next year.
