Peter Crouch on the moment he realised he'd made it as a footballer
His robot celebration is iconic 🤖
Footballing legend Peter Crouch joined Hits Radio Breakfast's Fleur East, James Barr and Producer Matt to talk about his new film That Peter Crouch Film, which is out now.
The film is an insight into the life of the former England footballer, who signed his first professional contract nearly 25 years ago. Fleur and the team wanted to know all about Peter's football career, that infamous robot dance and if he'd ever go on Strictly Come Dancing.
Peter's first professional contract was with Tottenham Hotspur back in 1998, however it wasn't until seven years later when he moved to Liverpool, that he felt he'd really made it.
"I remember when I signed for Liverpool I thought ‘I’ve made it now," he explained. "'I’m at Liverpool, I’m playing for England’ so I bought an Aston Martin. (Then one day) I saw Roy Keane at a set of traffic lights - I was listening to garage on full blast, had my arm out the window and some bins on - and he looked at me like I was something on the bottom of his shoe. I sold it that week – took a big hit on it!"
The 42-year-old then told us about his iconic robot dance celebration, which he first did in 2006, celebrating a goal for England against Hungary. However, following its success he performed it several more times and told us about it.
"I think I first did in in 2006," he explained. "Which is a long, long time ago, but to this day, kids who weren’t even born then, come up to me and are like ‘can you do the robot?’"
He continued: "It’s mad what’s happened! When I first did it I remember sitting in a hotel room afterwards and watching CNN, Sky News... it was on all of the channels. One of them even went to New York and asked body poppers where I was going wrong and how can I improve!"
The conversation then turned to Strictly Come Dancing, as we all know our lovely Fleur has been announced to co-host Strictly: It Takes Two, after making it to last year's final. However, after Peter's wife Abbey Clancy took part - and won it back in 2013, the team wanted to know if Peter could be tempted by it.
"I get asked all the time about Strictly," he said. "But obviously Abbey won it – I don’t want to rub that in Fleur! And I’m not going to trump that am I? I’ve got one move and when that’s done on week one I’m gone!"
Peter Crouch's new documentary called That Peter Crouch Film is now available to watch for free on Amazon Prime.
