Jesy Nelson discusses the importance of opening up about mental health
She's had to deal with hurtful comments online
Last updated 8th Oct 2021
Sunday 10th October is World Mental Health Day, and Hits Radio Breakfast's Fleur East spoke to singer Jesy Nelson about her struggles with her mental health and how she copes with comments she gets online.
Jesy, who released her solo single 'Boyz' on 8th October 2021, shared how important she thinks opening up about mental health is, saying: "I think, well for me personally, I know first-hand that not opening up about it for however many years I was struggling made it ten times worse for me."
She continued: "And then like as soon as I started talking to people about it, opening up about it, I literally felt as though someone had got a weight and lifted it off my shoulders, like I can't even describe to you how much more free I felt, like mentally so much happier.
"And it's so important. And I know it's scary, like a lot of people are embarrassed, they don't actually like to admit when they're struggling. But there's nothing wrong with that, theres actually more strength in saying 'you know what, I'm struggling, I need help'. Like i think that takes a lot of strength to be able to do that."

When asked about the advice Jesy would give to those who are struggling, she told us: "Open up, talk about it, whether it's with friends, family, a therapist, like thats the most important thing."
Jesy has detailed her struggle with comments from online trolls and has opened up about the impact on her mental health. Jesy told us that she is in a much better place now, saying: "I honestly, hand on my heart, this is the happiest I've ever felt, and I just feel like I've properly taken control of my life and that was something I really needed to do and yeah I'm around good people. I've got a great team and yeah I feel really good."
Jesy went on to talk about how she deals with internet trolls: "I honestly, hand on my heart, this is the happiest I've ever felt, and I just feel like I've properly taken control of my life and that was something I really needed to do and yeah I'm around good people, I've got a great team and yeah I feel really good."
She explained: "I think for someone to want to do that, you've got something deep rooted inside yourself, you're not happy and you've got some demons going on. No happy person would ever do that, so you have to empathise with them and feel sorry for them and think 'bless you', like I feel for you. Like you have to look at it that way and I just think just try not to read it like thats the worst thing you can do. Just don't like consume yourself."
Jesy has had to reduce the time she spends on social media and told us: "I've literally had to take control of it now. I hardly ever go on social media now, like my team have my Instagram, and they will, if i'm - I'm a very self-destructive person - so if I'm not feeling good, I'm not going to go on Instagram, because I know if I see something bad thats gonna ruin my whole day cause thats the kind of person I am."
However, to fans' delight, she does still use social media to interact with them: "The only times I go on Instagram is if I want to chat to my fans. I chat to my fans so much because they confide in me so much and I actually confide in them sometimes, which is really nice. They've become my friends. and I'll post when I need to but I really don't do the scrolly scrolly, getting bored, 'oh I'm just gonna go on my phone and see what's on' cause I just think thats so unhealthy. And it's so easy to get into that trap of consuming yourself with stuff that you see on Instagram."
As well as distancing herself from Instagram, she's also found ways to make it a more positive experience. She said: "You know what else someone said to me, 'follow positive people' like whoever you follow, make sure they're putting good out on Instagram, that makes you feel good so when you see it you feel good about yourself. You don't see things when it's fake and it's not real and it's just gonna make you feel rubbish."
When asked what was on her Instagram feed these days, she said: "At the moment it's Nicki Minaj, it's just all Nicki Minaj, which I love."
The singer's positive mindset also includes manifesting and she even has the word 'manifest' tattooed on her hand. She explained: "Honestly like don't ever let anyone tell you you cant do something. If you believe it and you want to do it, you bloody go for it."
