Hull City Council are urging people not to share unverified information on social media about future gatherings, following the weekend's disorder.

The authority has warned that it is causing unnecessary concern and impacting on local businesses.

It comes after fears about further disorder in cities across the UK last night failed to materialise.

In a statement issued by the local authority, Councillor Jack Haines, the portfolio holder for Communities, said:

“Despite the rumours of further events last night, I am delighted that we saw no repeat of these appalling actions from the small criminal minority who seek only to bring conflict and division to our streets.

“As we struggle to come to terms with the shock of experiencing the criminal, racist and destructive behaviour recently inflicted on our city, and on many other places around the country, we should take huge comfort and pride in our community’s response.

“I would like to thank everyone who is helping to get our great city get back on its feet so quickly. I was humbled to join volunteers who turned up in their hundreds along with family and friends to help with the clean-up and we want to thank the council teams who worked throughout the night and throughout the next day to ensure the city could get back to business as soon as possible. This is the Hull we know and love; an open, tolerant and united city.

“We continue to support Humberside Police in their work to bring justice to those responsible for the criminality on our streets, and I would like to thank them for their incredibly hard work on this and for their continuing efforts to keep us all safe. We are already seeing the prosecutions of those who took part. The message is clear, we will not stand for those who bring hate, division and fear to our communities.

“We would also encourage people not to recirculate on social media unverified information about possible future actions because this is causing unnecessary concern and is also impacting on local businesses. If you see something you are concerned about, please report it to Humberside Police.

“Show kindness to your friends, your neighbours, and everyone in your community. This is the best way to tackle those who seek to divide our community by showing how proud we are of everything that unifies us, and of Hull’s unique friendliness and openness. By being more ‘Hull’, we will show we are far better and stronger than those who would seek to divide us.”
