A man's been arrested after reports that a car had been shot at in Cottingham.

Police were called to Westfield Road around 9.10 pm last night (12.02) to reports a car containing five occupants pulled up to check directions, when a man came out of a nearby property and is believed to have fired a shot at the car.

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Robinson leading the investigation said: “The occupants of the car sought safety nearby and armed officers were immediately deployed to the area and on arrival further shots were heard.

“Thankfully nobody sustained any injuries, and a 68-year-old man was immediately arrested at the scene and remains in our custody at this time.

“However, I completely understand an incident of this nature will alarm local residents, and our neighbourhood policing team will be out and about in the area and across Cottingham providing reassurance. If you do have any concerns please do speak to them.

“Officers remain at the scene whilst we explore all lines of enquiry including conducting searches to understand what weapon may have been involved as well as the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“I can confirm that road closures remain in place between Westfield Road between Beverley Road and Riplingham Road at this time."
