A mental health and wellbeing day is being held in East Marsh on Saturday.

The event follows on from concerns raised during a local community meeting on mental health and wellbeing held in January. That itself was prompted by incidents at a railway Station.

The event on Saturday, May 3, will be held at Freeman Street Market, Grimsby, from 10am to 3pm. It has been co-organised by East Marsh Ward Cllr Nicola Aisthorpe (Liberal Democrat), Lindsay Hudson from North East Lincolnshire Council’s public health team, and East Marsh Involve community group.

At the community mental health and wellbeing meeting on January 28, residents indicated they wanted more accessible support, visible action, and greater opportunities to bring the community together.

‘East Marsh: A Day for Us’ has been created as a result. A new collective called A Better Grimsby was also created earlier this year, encouraging residents to speak up about the issues in North East Lincolnshire they want to change – including improved mental health provision.

Family fun activities will also take place to promote creativity, wellbeing, and environmental awareness among young people.

These include arts and craft sessions to create one’s own ‘Breathing Buddy’ – a jellyfish, octopus, dragon, or any imaginative creature – designed to help children manage anxiety by encouraging slow, mindful breathing during stressful moments.

Young people will also have the opportunity to enter the “Green Heroes Poster Contest,” creating posters that encourage environmental responsibility.

The best poster will win a free family swim pass or a two-week gym membership, donated by Lincs Inspire. The event will also have a ‘Dancing Dinosaurs’ activity where children and adults alike can don dinosaur masks and show off their best dance moves, with a special appearance by a friendly dinosaur too.

A wide range of local organisations will also be present offering advice and support. These include the council’s wellbeing service, With You, East Marsh Involve, Lincs Inspire, Navigo, Friendship At Home, Cudox, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Police, Samaritans, and GLiSH.

“This day has been shaped by the East Marsh community, for the East Marsh community,” said Cllr Aisthorpe, emphasising the calls for more opportunities to access support available at the previous community mental health meeting.

“East Marsh: A Day for Us is about creating space where people feel seen, heard, and valued. It brings services and residents together in one place, making support easier to reach and building stronger community ties at the same time.

I’m so proud of what’s been achieved through partnership and community spirit, and I hope everyone will come along, join in, and be part of it.”

Lindsay Hudson from the council’s public Health team said, “We know that connection, creativity, and community are powerful for wellbeing. This event brings all three together in a really accessible and joyful way.”
