It's hoped the kits, which could stop catastrophic bleeding might save lives

‘Trauma kits’ containing medical equipment to stop bleeding from knife are set to be fitted across Hull with newly signed off council funding.

A total of 50 trauma kits will be fitted after Hull City Council agreed to provide £25,000 in funding following a campaign from stabbing victim Corey Dobbe’s family.

They said they pushed for the kits to be provided across Hull so no family would have to go through the grief they experienced after his death in 2021.

Corey’s Legacy, set up by the family of the 23-year-old following his stabbing at Holderness Drain, off Harleston Close, in June 2021, initially pushed for the kits.

The family stated a rise in knife crime had also prompted the campaign.

They stated: “Corey was only 23 years old, he was too young to let his name die out so as a family we just wanted to carry on his legacy.

“We just don’t want anyone else to go through what we’ve been through.

“Obviously it’s not a position we thought we’d be in and campaigning for but if it can save one family from going through the grief we’ve gone through then that’s what we want to achieve.”

Council Community Safety Portfolio Holder Cllr Dave McCobb said he supported the funding to help make Hull safer.

The council funding for hard casings to house the trauma kits follows cash from Humberside’s Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office to buy the kits.

Each kit contains tourniquets, bandages and gels which can be used to stop bleeding.

A council decision record stated potentially long delays in ambulance responses meant other ways to stop potentially catastrophic bleeding were needed.

It stated: “Early intervention makes all the difference because victims can die of blood loss within minutes.

“The kits are widely used across the country and have been used on several occasions to save a patient’s life.

“We would like to ensure these kits are available across the city of Hull.”

The kits are set to be placed in key locations where there is high footfall, next to existing defibrillators.

A total of 17 local pubs in the city centre are also set to get kits for their venues and staff will be trained to use them, on top of the 50 to be fitted with council funding.

Existing trauma kits have already been fitted at Asda in Beverley Road, St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, the city centre Moderation and King Edward bars and Princes Quay.
