A prolific shoplifter, who tried to avoid arrest by fleeing from police in a car with no tyres, has been jailed.

Euton Rook, 42, led officers on a 10mph chase through Swarkestone on 18 August.

Officers were on the look out for a car they suspected had altered plates when they spotted it near the Crewe and Harpur pub. They signalled for it to stop, which it failed to do, and it was driven over stingers, popping all four of its tyres.

This slowed the car down, but didn't stop it, and police were led on a 10mph chase through the village.

The pursuit stopped when officers manoeuvred in front of the car. It attempted to swerve, but ultimately failed when it collided with a crash barrier and rammed into a police car, injuring the officer driving in the process.

Rooks was detained, with checks showing he had been banned from driving, was wanted for recall to prison, and wanted in connection with thefts.

The car had tape over the number plate to alter the registration. It had been used in a number of thefts.

Rook was subsequently charged with two counts of shop theft, failing to stop when required by a police officer, driving while disqualified, using a vehicle without insurance, failing to provide a specimen, criminal damage and assault.

The 42-year-old, of no fixed address, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on 20 August when he admitted the offences.

He was jailed for a total of 41 weeks, disqualified from driving for 692 days, and ordered to pay court costs of £85. He must also pay compensation to the officer and the two shops.
