The family of a woman who was found dead at her home in East Leicester have condemned the man who stole her bank cards after finding her.

Just after 6am on 4 July, police were called to Jacqui Potter’s address in Radiant Road, Thurncourt following a report she had been found dead inside.

An investigation, led by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), to establish the circumstances of what happened began. It was established that on 1 July Gabrial Strzeszwksi – also known as Carl Sanders – had gone to her property. After shouting for her through a bathroom window and receiving no response, he made his way inside and found her in her bedroom.

Sanders took two bank cards from her purse and left the address but did not contact the emergency services. The cards were then used to withdraw cash on 3 and 4 July.

Strzeszwksi, 48, was arrested by police on 4 July.

During a hearing at Leicester Crown Court on 17 October, he pleaded guilty to one count of preventing a lawful and decent burial, one count of theft and one count of fraud.

Today at the same court Strzeszwksi, Flamborough Road, Thurncourt, was sentenced to a total of 23 months’ imprisonment.

In a statement, Ms Potter’s family described his actions as “both shocking and distressing” and that “her dignity had been stripped away” and that it was “an act so inhumane we find it hard to process.”

Detective Constable David Masters, from EMSOU, said: “This is a case that’s difficult to comprehend and our thoughts and condolences remain with Ms Potter’s family at this time.

“Despite knowing her for some time, upon finding her, Strzeszwksi saw nothing but an opportunity for personal gain.

“While no sentence is going to bring Ms Potter back, I hope her loved ones can take some relief from the fact he has been brought to justice.”
