A man from Leicester has been handed a three-year Stalking Protection Order after following a woman he didn't know for nearly two years.

Sarwar Mustafa from Newfoundpool first saw his victim in 2023 when he went into the shop where she worked. He went on to visit the shop over the next several months, telling her colleagues that he was her boyfriend.

The 28-year-old then started sending her messages on social media from an account under the name of Saro Nasren.

He found her while she was out with friends in Leicester one evening last year and, again, visited her place of work to look for her in February.

Following that incident, she contacted police and after speaking to detectives said she would be keen for them to seek a SPO against Mustafa.

Detective Constable Kevin Sharkey was the investigating officer. He said: “Stalking Protection Orders were introduced in January 2020 and breaching one can result in a prison sentence of up to five years. Only police can make an application, meaning there is no pressure on a victim to do so.

“They can be obtained for both domestic and stranger stalking and I’d encourage anyone who has been subject to similar behaviour to report it to police so appropriate action can be taken.

“The terms of the order prohibit Mustafa from contacting the victim – or her family – for three years, including via social media.

“I’d like to commend her for her co-operation and bravery throughout the process. The information she was able to provide was key to securing today’s outcome. I hope this will provide her with a degree of closure, reassurance and will allow her to move on with her life.”

Yesterday (24 June) at Leicester Magistrates’ Court, Mustafa – of Pool Road – was made subject to the order, which prohibits contact with the victim either in person, electronically or via a third party. It also prohibits him from attending any property where he knows or suspects the victim is at.
