Bomb disposal experts have been called out to an abandoned vehicle after a man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

Leicestershire Police said officers were called to a report that a gun had been fired in The Glade in Braunstone Town, near Leicester, shortly before 10am on Tuesday.

The force said in a statement: "In the interest of public and police safety, armed officers were deployed.

"A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. No injuries have been reported.

"Following further enquiries an abandoned vehicle was located by officers.

"A cordon has been put in place and several properties have been evacuated. Officers are liaising with colleagues from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team have been contacted."

Several road closures remain in place and both pedestrians and motorists are advised to avoid the area, the Leicestershire force said.
