Human remains have been found in Leicester as police search for a missing woman.

Police searching for a woman who went missing nearly 20 years ago have found a body in Leicester.

Specialist officers were searching land off the Great Central Way as part of an investigation into the disappearance of Malgorzata Wnuczek when they came across human remains.

The Polish national was living in Leicester when she disappeared on 31 May 2006. She was last seen after catching a bus from her place of work at Peter Jackson Logistics in Sunningdale Road into Leicester city centre.

It is unknown whether the remains are those of Ms Wnuczek. Further forensic examinations will be carried out to identify them.

Malgorzata Wnuczek went missing in Leicester 20 years ago.

Detective Superintendent Jenni Greenway, the senior investigating officer, said: “While I appreciate this news may come as a shock to the community, I hope this discovery will provide us with information that helps us understand what may or may not have happened to Malgorzata.

“Officers are in contact with her family and are providing support to them at what is undoubtedly a difficult time.

“Officers will remain in the Watkin Road area to carry out further work and also provide reassurance to those living nearby.”

Officers are in contact with Ms Wnuczek’s family and are providing support to them. Her family have asked that their privacy is respected at this time. Officers are also remain in contact with KWP Bydgoszcz in Poland.

A search of the area is continuing.
