The lifeguard season across the South West officially ended yesterday - meaning beaches across Devon and Cornwall will have no lifeguards until the spring.

Lifeguards ended their final patrol of the year at 5pm yesterday, across 23 beaches in Devon, Cornwall and Jersey, meaning there will also be no guidance flags on beaches.

As winter approaches, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) are urging the public to be cautious when visiting the coast.

Henry Saddler-Irvine, RNLI Lifeguard Lead for the south west, said: "Always tell someone where you’re going and carry a means of communication for calling for help. If you see someone in trouble dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

Winter beach safety advice

The RNLI advises those making winter beach visits to avoid swimming alone, and wear a bright swimming cap or a tow float to make sure they're visible.

When getting into water, the RNLI says to enter gradually so you can acclimatise, and if you fall in, try to float on your back, control your breathing and call for help.

Lifeguards also recommend to swimmers to stay within their limits - which will be a lower amount of time than usual in cold conditions.

They are also told to warm up properly after swimming, with warm clothes and a hot drink recommended.
