Bird flu confirmed in Devon
Found in commercial poultry near Teignmouth, Teignbridge
Cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, have been confirmed near Teignmouth, Teignbridge, Devon.
The presence of the disease was confirmed yesterday (19 February) in a commercial poultry premises.
A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone has been declared around the premises.
All poultry on the premises will be humanely culled in the hopes of controlling the outbreak.
This comes after an 'Avian Influenza Prevention Zone' has been out in place across all of England, Scotland and Wales.
The AIPZ measures apply to all bird keepers whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock and are essential to protecting flocks from avian influenza.
The AIPZ will be in place until further notice and will be kept under regular review as part of the government’s work to monitor and manage the risks of avian influenza.
There are also some areas of England with 'Mandatory housing measures' in place, where the disease is thought to be more prevelant.
The areas where these measure apply are Cheshire, City of Kingston Upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside , Norfolk, North Yorkshire, Shropshire, Suffolk, Worcestershire and York.
