Four men have been jailed following an incident in Carlisle last year which left two people with a fractured pelvis and other injuries.

The four men appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today (Aug 16) having pleaded guilty

Craig Metcalfe, 42, of Lightfoot Drive, Carlisle was jailed for three years two months for two counts of grievous bodily harm.

Aaron Devaney, 35, of no fixed address was jailed for three years two months for two counts of grievous bodily harm.

Nicholas Maxwell, 34, of no fixed address was jailed for three years four months for two counts of grievous bodily harm.

Stuart Kendrick, 42, of no fixed address was jailed for three years four months for two counts of grievous bodily harm.

All four have also been given Criminal Behaviour Orders for ten years.

On 24 October 2023 at around 6:12am, Cumbria Police’s control room received several calls to the report of fighting in the street and a vehicle driving erratically on Gloucester Road in Carlisle.

Officers entered a property on Gloucester Road having heard groaning and located three people with notable injuries.

It was established that Maxwell had attended the address before leaving shouting abuse at one of the victims, a man. A short time later the same victim received a call from Maxwell asking him to come outside where he was waiting in a vehicle.

Once outside Maxwell started to attack the victim before being joined by others in balaclavas who got out the vehicle knocking over and kicking the victim to the head.

All four then got back into the vehicle driving back and forth repeatedly, knocking the victim to the ground, and then driving over him.

A second victim was then pinned to the alleyway wall by the car as it reversed into her before speeding of into town.

Police then received a call at 8:20am about the vehicle, which was located by officers outside Silloth Street, inside a property officers located Maxwell, Metcalfe, Devaney, and Kendrick who were arrested.

"This was clearly a pre-prepared attack"

CCTV enquiries conducted at the address showed at approximately 6am that morning four people wearing balaclavas or attempting to cover their face got into a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle used in the incident.

They returned 19 minutes later with CCTV showing blood on Devaney’s hands before all four changed their clothes and left the address.

The officer investigating the incident Detective Constable Emma Barker from Cumberland CID said:

“This assault left two people with significant injuries, with the suspects using the vehicle as a weapon to cause injury.

“This was clearly a pre-prepared attack intent on causing injury to the victims, with all four preparing for the assault by covering their faces.

“Violence of this nature is unacceptable, and we Cumbria Police will do everything we can to make sure those who engage in such acts of violence are brought to justice.”
