Coventry youth calling for more safe spaces
The 'My Tomorrow' campaign by West Midlands Police is helping young people in Coventry create positive action
Young mentors from Coventry are advocating change through the 'My Tomorrow' campaign which aims to challenge harmful stereotypes around age, race, class and postcodes.
Young changemakers gathered at a Youth Takeover event yesterday, which showcased the importance of safe spaces for young people.
There are 19 designated safe spaces in Coventry where young people can engage with support and constructive activities and also speak with mentors, youth workers, careers advisors and other young people.
Around 200 people attended the Youth Takeover event highlighting the need for safe spaces in the city.
Akulu is a young person who attending the event, they said: "I believe it's essential for us to have a platform where our voices matter.
"Events like this provide us with the opportunity to connect with other young people, youth providers and collaborate by sharing our ideas on how young people can be better supported and continue to create safer spaces.
"It's also our chance to try new experiences such as virtual reality in a fun, engaging and safe space."
Cllr Patricia Seaman, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Coventry City Council, who spoke on the importance of the event and safe spaces.
Cllr Seaman said: “As a Child-Friendly city, we work closely with our young people and their families, and a Youth Takeover event is a great way to talk to them, listen to what they want to see in our city and give them the support they need in the future.”
