Plans for the establishment of a new passenger rail service connecting the West Midlands and London have been supported by the Prime Minister.

A new rail operator - known as the Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway (WMSR) - has already been formed hoping to connect London directly with Wrexham, through other stations including Nuneaton, Walsall and Shrewsbury.

The operator submitted an application for permission to run the route, with Shrewsbury MP Julia Buckley asking for governmental support on the initiative.

During Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday (May 21st), Buckley asked whether Sir Keir Starmer would back the application.

He responded to the proposals, saying he would be "delighted to make sure the MP and other interested MPs meet with the rail minister to put their case forward".

Should the plans be approved, five trains a day would run in each direction between Wrexham General and London Euston from Monday to Saturday, reducing to four on Sunday.

A number of stops would be called at, including Gobowen, Telford Central and Milton Keynes, connecting more rural communities with the capital.

In general, the route would be bypassing Birmingham by using a railway only used for freight services.

A formal application to open the service was submitted to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on Thursday, they added.
