Coventry University expert shares heatwave sleep and wellness tips
The UK is currently experiencing it's third heatwave of the year
Coventry and Warwickshire is bracing it's third heatwave this year, with highs of 31 degrees Celsius predicted today.
June marked England’s hottest month on record, with top temperatures hitting 35.8°C in Faversham, Kent, and further heat alerts are expected this week.
Whilst high temperatures comes as a pleasant change from traditional British weather, many people often feel uncomfortable in the heat - especially when we sleep.
Dr Thake is based at Coventry University’s Centre for Physical Activity, Sport and Exercise Sciences, specialises in human responses to extreme environments – including heat and altitude.
Dr Thake has been sharing his top tips on how we can stay cool at night as temperatures increase, he said: "One of my main tips is to sleep downstairs as heat rises.
"I would also recommend to spread out in bed to avoid heat building up, you can try a ‘starfish’ position or sleep on your side.
"Keep bedrooms cool by closing curtains during the day and allowing air flow in by opening windows.
"You can also take a cool shower or bath before bed and use calming breathing techniques to relax."
NHS England is encouraging people to look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated.
This comes as older people, those with underlying health conditions and those who live alone are particularly at risk during the heatwave.
