A new community group has been launched in Coventry to provide support and services for the city’s LGBTQ+ residents.
The start of Unity marks a new milestone for the queer community in Coventry, who believe the city has lacked a sense of cohesion in recent years.
Richard Easter, director of gay club the Yard, explained how Unity will provide people with a sense of belonging.
He said: “The community has always been historically strong in Coventry; however, we feel it’s not as close as it used to be.
“So, through Unity in Coventry we are trying to get everyone back together again.”
The group aims to bring people together through essential services, inclusive events and safe spaces.
Unity will also work with local businesses and organisations to strengthen community bonds.
This is said to be particularly important for members of the LGBTQ+ community who deal with feelings of isolation or are struggling to get their opinions heard.
Dee Hodgson, director of Unity in Coventry, says combating marginalisation is a key aim for the group.
She said: “We want to hear what the community needs moving forward through our community panel.
“We don’t want to presume that we understand what they need before we hear their voices first and I think that’s really important.”
