Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire are urging people to check in on their elderly relatives and neighbours after the cold snap this weekend.

Last week, the UK Health Security Agency warned that amber weather warnings could lead to a rise in deaths amongst people over 65, alongside a rising demand for health services.

Michael Garret is the Chief Executive for Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire.

Michael has been sharing how Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire supports elderly people during the harsh winter weather.

Michael said: "In Coventry and Warwickshire, we support over 500 people in their homes and we help with things like shopping, cleaning and preparing meals.

"We also collect and distribute blankets to older people most in need.

"Earlier this year we received funding to do a range of home energy checks, that improve insulation and fuel efficiency in the home as well."

As the cold surge is expected to continue, Michael shared some advice on how elderly people can keep warm during the winter months.

Michael said: "Have your heating on and try to block drafts in the house.

"Wrap up warm in multiple layers of clothing, wear warm pyjamas to bed and thick socks. Hot water bottles are also a particularly energy efficient way of keeping warm."

For those in the region who may have concerns for a elderly relative or neighbour, Michael also suggested ways in which the community can show their support.

Michael said: "It's critically important as a community to pull together and check in on loved ones, neighbours, and anyone who may not have anybody else around them.

"In some instances it may be helpful to go and collect medicines, for colds or sore throats, or do some shopping for essentials they may not have in the house, to keep them warm.

"These are very small things that make a significant impact."
