Now - how would you like some cash for your trash?

Last week, the Labour Party passed laws for a deposit return scheme - a recycling scheme with a cash incentive.

The new deposit return scheme will see consumers pay a deposit on cans or bottles and when they return the container they will get a refund.

The scheme is supported by Labour MP for Coventry East, Mary Creagh. MP Creagh has been telling us of the benefits it will have.

MP Creagh said: "We are determined as a new government to clean up Britain and to end the throwaway society.

"We want to stop the avalanche of rubbish that's filling up our streets, our parks, our rivers, our oceans and to protect treasured national wildlife.

"Turning trash into cash also kickstarts clean growth, more resilient supply chains and new green jobs."

MP Mary Creagh also believes the initiative will benefit communities in Coventry.

MP Creagh said: "I represent the most deprived parts of the city and what is clear to me that is that this is an issue that affects the poorest people the most.

"Everybody's environment starts at their front door and if you are walking your children to school or travelling to work or college and you're seeing litter around, it attracts other types of environmental crime, such as fly tipping.

"Often other forms of waste and environmental crime can actually bring in much more serious criminal and organised crime groups. So, you know, we want to, we want to stop this type of crime.

"As soon as you attach monetary value to plastic bottles and drinks cans, which are the most commonly littered items, you will see overnight people's behaviour change."

"We also need to think about litter bins and and creating places where people can store their bottles, this is also a great potential way of raising funds for schools and charities as well."

The Return Deposit Scheme is expected to start in October 2027.
