Author using the power of storytelling to combat harms of illegal vapes in Warwickshire
'Vaping Scars' has been written in partnership with Nuneaton and Bedworth Council and Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner
An author is aiming to educate young people in Warwickshire on the harms of illegal vapes and organised crime through the power of storytelling.
Christina Gabbitas is an Author, Educator and Honorary Member of NSPCC Council and has written 'Vaping Scars' in partnership with Nuneaton and Bedworth Council and Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner.
Last week's crackdown on illegal vapes and organised crime across the UK highlighted how easily accessible illegal vapes are for young people, including those in Warwickshire.
Christina's recent project 'Vaping Scars' aims to address youth issues. The story will be used as a tool by different education teams across Warwickshire to highlight the serious dangers linked to illegal vapes and organised crime.
Christina said: "It's scary to think that many young people don't know what is in these illegal vapes and smaller shops are taking them and selling them under the counter, so they're easily accessible.
"In one instance, there was a shop Nuneaton hiding these vapes in the floorboards.
"These vapes can be lethal and are causing real concern. Some children are passing out at school or even being hospitalised. My story, aims to address this and the exploitation linked to vapes as well."
Christina continued to say how storytelling is a vital tool to get this message across to young people in Warwickshire.
Christina said: "It's pitched at their age group, so it's age appropriate, they identify with it and then they connect with the characters and that's when it becomes impactful in getting the message across.
"Through the power of storytelling you can give children and young people a voice, getting them to voice what they think and what they feel."
Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe said: “I’m really pleased my office has been able to help fund the production of this important story by Christina, supporting the project led by the Nuneaton and Bedworth Community Safety Partnership.
"The powerful story it tells fits perfectly with my Police and Crime Plan’s aim to keep people safe by tackling exploitation and reducing the harm caused by substance misuse.
“Protecting young people and addressing the serious dangers linked to exploitation and substance misuse is absolutely vital.
"With backing from Community Safety Partnerships countywide, this video will be rolled out across Warwickshire as a powerful tool to raise awareness, help young people understand the risks around vaping and exploitation, and make our communities safer for everyone.”
