Cold callers are said to be doing the rounds in the Hayle area, prompting Devon and Cornwall Police to put out some crime prevention advice.

Officers say they've had reports of people offering roof cleaning and maintenance work to householders, without appointments.

Trading Standards accompanied police to a visit on Wednesday (9th April) after an incident in Hayle.

Arrests were made on suspicion of immigration offences and fraud.

There's some advice from officers on what to watch out for:

  • Do not agree to work offered by unsolicited doorstep callers, as the risks are high. Some rogue traders advertise their work by delivering leaflets through your door, or advertising their work online or social media.
  • If you want work doing in your home or garden, take time to get three quotes from reputable businesses you trust and make your decision on who to use in your own time.
  • If you are concerned someone is at risk, always call the police.
  • If you are concerned rogue traders are operating in your area, always report it.
  • If someone knocks on your door and you are not sure, don’t open the door.
  • If a company claims to be working with a local council, contact the local council yourself to check this is true.
  • If you see cold callers in the area, have concerns, or have any information please phone 101, if possible, please make a note of any descriptions and vehicle registrations seen.

We're also asked to call 999 if such activity's taking place, or if a crime is in progress.
