Money seized from crime supports Porthleven women’s craft group
£500 awarded from POCA fund helps buy new equipment
Money earned through crime is being redirected to support local communities, with £500 awarded to a women’s sewing club in Porthleven.
The Women’s Institute Craft Group has received funding from the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) fund via the neighbourhood policing team. The funding has been used to purchase sewing machines and essential equipment to enable the group to continue its work in the community.
The craft group provides an inclusive space for women to develop skills, gain confidence, and make social connections. It has been at the heart of the community for years, offering women of all ages opportunities to come together for creative pursuits.
Police Community Support Officer Julia Berry said: “Projects like this play an important role in strengthening communities, reducing isolation and supporting wellbeing.
“This club has been running for a number of years at the heart of the community, providing a wonderful social space for women of all ages to come together to learn and develop their crafting skills.
“I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to support the group.”
Wendy Harris, President of the Porthleven Women’s Institute, expressed gratitude for the funding, saying: “On behalf of everyone at Porthleven Women’s Institute, I would like to thank Devon & Cornwall Police for this generous award.
“Knowing that money recovered from crime is now being used to benefit our local community makes it even more special. This equipment will make a real difference to our Craft Group and help us continue to grow and inspire others.”
Craft Group Leaders Sandra and Linzie said: “This funding means we can expand our projects and offer more opportunities for our members to learn new skills and work together on creative community activities. We are so grateful for this support.”
Money in the POCA fund is seized from convicted criminals who have made financial gains from crime. These funds are then reinvested in communities to support local causes that make a positive difference to people’s lives.
