Drivers are being warned the Saltash Tunnel will be closed overnight later this week.

The tunnel's going to be closed on weeknights from 8pm to 6am, starting on Tuesday for surveys and preparation work. The work will last for two weeks.

It comes ahead of a major upgrade of the tunnel and traffic control system, which includes things like electrics, signs, LED lighting and fans - that's due to begin in the early part of next year.

National Highways says the closure of the tunnel is essential, as it's difficult to work safely in the tunnel without closing it.

They ask that motorists follow the standard diversion route via the B3271 and North Road during the tunnel closures.

The agency says they are in the final stages of preparing the programme of works for next year’s scheme which includes traffic management plans. The works will be phased, and they say the full details will be shared as soon possible.
