The first UK festival aimed at girls celebrating aviation and aerospace is taking place in Cornwall today (Saturday 22 June).

The sold out event at RNAS Culdrose is called 'Reach for the Sky', and it's aiming to inspire future generations and encourage more young women into the industry.

It comes as figures reveal that women make up less than 6% of pilots and fewer than 10% of aviation engineers in the UK.

Hosted by Truro-based community interest company TECgirls, the day will be packed with future skills workshops - including rocket launches, Mars Rover robots, a VR zone and much more.

Caitlin Gould, Director of TECgirls said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be launching this unique event to Cornwall.

"Through Reach for the Sky festival, we hope to empower young girls to explore the exciting and diverse career paths available to them within this industry.

"We are also keen to show girls that they do not need to leave Cornwall to chase their dreams, and that there are countless incredible opportunities right here in the county."

Although the festival is aimed at girls between the ages of 7-18, TECgirls say they welcome all children of all genders and ages.

Reach for the Sky takes place from 10.00am until 4.00pm.
