Disabled woman making the Cornish Coast accessible
Sharon Thomas has started a YouTube channel to show that people with accessibility needs can still enjoy nature
A disabled woman from Cornwall is showing people that anyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the Cornish coast.
Sharon Thomas has started a YouTube channel, where she tries various nature walks, that are advertised as 'accessible'.
She also works closely with the National Trust and the South West Coast Path Association to improve the accessibility of their sites.
She said: I realised it was really difficult and increasingly difficult to find information about accessible walks and having had the experience of somewhere saying it's accessible and then being there and falling down the ravine and all sorts.
"I thought OK you have to do something positive about it.
"So now I'll go out and film but I don't just do that. I basically go and report back to the places where I am and say you have a major issue and that's how it's all evolved.
"And I love doing it. And if you can help someone else, then what better thing to be able to do?"
She went on to explain: "When you have a disability, you completely lose your identity. You have to rediscover who you are.
"You think it's an automatic that in the countryside, in Cornwall especially, you can't access it, is totally inaccessible, but it's finding what makes you happy.
"It's very difficult thing to actually say. What makes me happy. And I know that when I go out in the countryside, especially on the coastal path and in Cornwall, what I mean what a joy to be in Cornwall.
"That actually started to heal my traumas and my condition.
"I could rediscover who I who I was basically, and I think that's that's something very special.
"You can do the same as other people can do. And you can actually join in with a community of the same people that are as passionate as you are about it. And that's something that's really worthwhile."
