Despite a fall in the numbers being caught drink or drug driving over Christmas - in Devon and Cornwall - police say operations will continue throughout 2025.

Police have given an update on their December crackdown - saying 284 were arrested this time, down from 355 the year before.

On Christmas day, 11 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving (seven males and four females) and 1 male was arrested after testing positive for cocaine at the roadside.

On New Year's Eve and into the early hours of New Years Day, seven people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

During December 2024, the force received 227 calls in relation to suspected drink or drug drivers.

In 2024, 976 people were injured as a result of collisions on roads in Devon and Cornwall – an increase of 200 from 2023.

The number of people killed has also risen each year, with 45 people losing their lives in 2022, 51 in 2023 and 53 in 2024.

Almost 50 per cent of people involved in serious or fatal collisions in Devon and Cornwall last year were under 40 years old.
