'Their pets are their family’: Peterborough vet calls for action to support homeless pet owners
StreetVet urges public donations as growing numbers of rough sleepers are being forced to choose between their pets and a bed for the night
A charity working in Peterborough is calling for more support this winter to help people experiencing homelessness stay with their pets who, for many, are their only source of love, stability and security.
StreetVet - co-founded by vet Jade Statt - provides free, accessible veterinary care to pets belonging to people without stable housing.
Jade says that in many cases, pets are the last emotional lifeline someone has left.
“These pets are part of their family. They’re their best friends - a source of companionship, warmth and security,” she said.
“The misconception is that people get a pet after becoming homeless, but most have had their animals long before. Losing them would be devastating.”
This week, the charity is taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, which runs until December 9.
Any donation made during the campaign will be doubled, helping StreetVet reach even more people in need.
“Even a small donation will make a massive difference,” Jade said.
“Every pound given this week is doubled, and that can help us keep more people and pets healthy, safe and together.”
StreetVet teams operate across the UK, offering outreach vet care, supplies and support.
Jade, who has worked as a vet for more than 20 years, says she’s witnessed some of the most meaningful human-animal relationships while working on the streets.
As winter approaches, the charity is urging the public to back their work and help ensure no one has to choose between shelter and their pet.
